Kalbarri Kid is a West Australian observational documentary about Tony Mouritz, a complex man from Hyden who lived an interesting life. A depression era farm boy with repeated life setbacks, his fighting spirit, determination and resilience led this horse-whisperer to find and realise his dreams in Kalbarri. A lifetime bond pleasing an abusive father, supporting a family of five in the unforgiving outback and a life-changing bashing at his roadhouse, all had to be absorbed.
Told through the lens of an ageing and introspective Tony, his family, local power brokers and racing professionals, this short documentary promises a rich insight into a different time, a man’s love affair with the noblest of creatures and a secret obsession that belied his macho cowboy persona.
